Carin van Dongen wilde een werk maken “puur gedreven door energie”. Ze wilde “uit de bocht vliegen” en vervolgens alle toevalligheden omarmen en consolideren. Hoewel het maakproces onder onderbewust sterk gedreven is door Carin’s ervaringen en fascinaties, dient ‘Babel I’ geenszins haar identiteit of individu tentoon te stellen. Het werk etaleert bovenal zichzelf in al zijn kleur en vorm.

Met ‘Babel I’ verlaat Carin haar comfortzone. Doorgaans dient haar werk altijd een praktische bruikbaarheid. Ze maakt tegelwerk, ontwerpt schoolpleinen, decors voor dansvoorstellingen en helpt zelfs met internationale skateparkprojecten. Voor deze tentoonstelling daagde Carin zichzelf echter – voor het eerst sinds 1998 – uit zich volledig over te geven aan vrij werk.

Carin van Dongen wanted to create a work “purely driven by energy.” She wanted to “go off the rails” and then embrace all the coincidences and consolidate them. Although the creation process is strongly driven by Carin’s experiences and fascinations on a subconscious level, ‘Babel I’ in no way aims to showcase her identity or individuality. The work primarily exhibits itself in all its color and form.

With ‘Babel I,’ Carin steps out of her comfort zone. Typically, her work always serves a practical utility. She creates tile work, designs schoolyards and sets for dance performances, she engages in creative community projects and even assists in international skatepark projects. However, for this exhibition, Carin challenged herself – for the first time since 1998 – to fully surrender to creating autonomous art.
